Various social service agencies (Catholic Charities, Lutheran Relief Services, etc.) contract with the U.S. government to resettle various refugees into the United States. In recent years, they have resettled families from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somali, Burma and other countries in the Milwaukee area, with many residing near the Islamic Center on Milwaukee’s South side.
Because the resettlement agencies offer extremely limited services, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee has taken part in assisting many of these refugees. In addition to providing the refugees with basis needs and financial assistance, the ISM also tries to provide educational and cultural programs to help the new refugees become accustomed to life in their new country.
