The Islamic Society of Milwaukee participates in a wide variety of Interfaith discussions and Interfaith programs.
For the last few years, members of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee has been engaged in monthly dialogues with members of the Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee. (ISM’s relationship with the Christian community goes back as early as 1980 when the members of the ISM became involved with the Islamic-Christian Dialogue, a Subcommittee of the Milwaukee Archdiocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission. Organizers included Srs. Jessine Reiss and Lucille Walsh. Participants included the (late) Reverend Humphrey Walz (Presbyterian), the Rev. and Mrs. Elliott Bush (United Methodist Church), the Rev. Paul Rogers and Sr. Maureen Hopkins (Roman Catholic), the Rev. William Parrish, the Reverend Thomas C. Pexton (United Church of Christ), and others).
For the past several years, members of the ISM have also been engaged in monthly dialogues with Congregation Emanu-El B’Ne Jeshurun under the leadership of Rabbi Marc Berkson. Besides engaging in lively discussions pertaining to religious and theological matters, members of each congregation have also had the opportunity to visit the house of worship of the other congregation.
The ISM strongly believes in the importance of organizing and participating in Interfaith Programs. Recent events have included the following:
On Thursday, December 8, 2011, representatives of the ISM participated in the 41st Annual Awards Luncheon of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee which was held at the Italian Community Center.
On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the ISM helped organize a very successful workshop program entitled “September 11: Ten years later – Our Commitment to Peace and Justice. Co-organized by the Wisconsin Council of Churches and the Southeast Milwaukee Interfaith Covenant Community, the program drew over 250 participants.
On Sunday, March 25, 2012, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee will be the host for the Milwaukee Area Interfaith Youth Cafe. The program will run from 12:30pm-3:00pm. Registration is required.
