Youth play a crucial role in the future of any community. It is for this reason that the Islamic Society of Milwaukee (ISM) finds investing in youth programs a top priority. The main ISM youth activity is the Friday Youth Night, in which participants aged 12-18 come together for a fun and educational night at the Masjid. The night begins with a short Islamic talk and discussion about topics that are relevant to the youth. This talk provides participants a forum to learn about and discuss issues that are pertinent in their own lives. Following the discussion, the group prays in congregation, allowing the youth to also integrate with older members of the community. After prayer, participants socialize, eat pizza and enter the gymnasium where they play basketball and other sports. Depending on the time of year, the program ends with the night congregational prayer (Isha) and the youth return home.
Along with Friday Youth Night, ISM also holds regular weekly study circles for the older youth (college aged) on Sunday evenings. In addition to the regular youth programs, the ISM also provides a number of larger scale programs, such as retreats, all-night qiyam programs, and seminars. Once a month, our youth participate in an interfaith youth café, in which youth of different religious backgrounds meet to share their beliefs.
These youth programs play a number of vital roles. First, these programs provide our youth with an alternative to other un-Islamic social environments. Through our Friday youth night, for example, participants are offered a safe Islamic atmosphere where they can spend their Friday nights. In addition, these programs provide youth with a venue to meet and mingle with other Muslim youth of their age. By meeting regularly, youth have a chance to socialize with friends and build a stronger attachment to the community at large. Most importantly, these programs help educate our youth and provide them with a strong Islamic foundation.
Our beloved Prophet (pbuh) told us that among the seven people who will be shaded by Allah on the Day of Judgment will be a pious youth. The goal of the ISM youth program is to help raise these pious youth by inspiring and engendering in them a strong sense of Islamic identity by which they can become leaders both within the Muslim community, as well as in the community at large.
